HAPPY NEW YEAR: CELEBRATE THE LORD’S SUPPER
The Lord's Supper is a symbolic act of obedience. Through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, we memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming. This Sunday, in celebration of our Savior and the New Year, we will share Communion. Like Communion that we observe in worship, this is an open Communion (you don’t need to be a member to participate).
The artwork above is an image found on the Internet, credited to Sieger Koder (German priest-artist, 1925- ), titled "The Last Supper." The painting is from the perspective of Christ facing his disciples. You see Jesus' face reflected in the cup of red wine and the Chi Rho symbol in the broken bread.
Approach Communion with these three perspectives:
1. Remember the Past
The Israelites were often commanded to "remember" God's acts of faithfulness through meals and celebrations. Through Communion, Jesus has given us an instruction to continually remember that our blessings were purchased through a costly price: the forgiveness of our sins by the shedding of Christ's blood.
2. Enjoy the Present
As followers of Christ, we are in fellowship with each other. When we join together for Communion, we are together in the presence of the Lord Jesus. Again, as in the Old Testament, this is a joyous meal and celebration (Exod. 24:11).
3. Look Forward to the Future
Each time we proclaim His death through Communion, we are also reminded that He is returning. In His death, burial and resurrection Christ was removed from us physically. The Holy Spirit now gives us Christ's presence. When He returns, our faith will become sight. The future dimension recognizes the tension of Christian experience – we enjoy now only the first-fruits, and long for the full harvest (Rom. 8:18,23).
Prepare for Communion:
1. Read Matthew 26:17-36; Mark 14:12-26; Luke 22:7-23; and 1 Corinthians 11:17-34.
2. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal your sins and then confess them.
3. Pray the following prayer for Generosity by St. Ignatius:
“Lord, teach me to be generous.
Teach me to serve you as you deserve;
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest,
to labor and not to ask for reward,
save that of knowing that I do your will.”
This month we also start our new study series “The Roads Less Traveled.” We will look at some spiritual disciplines. These disciplines are not always easy. But, our study will discuss how these disciplines prepare us for and are a part of a Christian lifestyle.
This week’s study is “A Lifestyle of Community.” A Christian lifestyle is not an individual matter. Becoming a Christ follower means becoming a part of His body – His family. God hasn’t created His followers to be individual islands of faith. God’s plan for believers is that they grow in their faith through interaction and involvement with other believers. Each observance of the Lord's Supper is a great opportunity to get closer to the Lord and fellowship with each other.
As we celebrate the New Year together this Sunday, we will also celebrate our Savior. I look forward to Communion with you this Sunday. Remember, God who created everything is still in control of His creation. Keep praying for each other, caring for each other and take care of your families. John

Prayer requests for the week of 12-26

We had a small group on Sunday but still had these requests that were shared. Please be faithful to lift these to the Father often this week.

Tiffany Zachary asked us to pray for Tim's brother, Jeff, and also for his sister, Cindy.

Scott Grizzle said his parents are still having trouble getting their landlord/neighbor to take care of the sewer backup problem they are having. They need resolution or will need to move.

Janna Bendure asked for prayer to have patience and wisdom in how to effectively discipline their 3 year old son Aaron.

Brenda Elmore asks for prayer for Vicki Peters who was involved in a fatal car accident Nov 7th that took the life of her best friend, Reta Peters. Vicki is feeling guilty and now desperation and deep despair as Reta's parents will not let her have a relationship with Reta's 2 year old little girl, Bella. Vicki's depression is very serious. Please pray she'll stay focused on Him and not give up.

DIVINE APPOINTMENT:
How should I respond when divine moments present themselves?
Learning to live a life of “going and telling” is the way of the church, and it always has been. It’s the greatest, scariest, and most exciting life all at once. The missional nature of the church, and for individual believers, is to seize every service opportunity as the moments present themselves. Some moments will open up for you to share your story, others will be opportunities to serve, while others may be simply to offer an encouraging word. Not sure what to do? Just trust the Spirit, who’s moving in and around you, to point you in the right direction. There will be divine appointments created for you every day. But how will you respond?
Living as a Christian means entering into the great story of God’s mission in the world. Each of us has the opportunity to join God’s work of reconciling the world to Himself. As you face the end of one year and the beginning of another, resolve now to join Jesus in all of His mercy-filled intentions for the people of this world.

DIVINE INVITATION
What does the Christmas story have to do with me? Read Luke Chapter 2. Think about an actual birth experience in the year 2010. Now, think about Mary and Joseph's birth experience, as first time parents. The birth of a child transforms the lives of the parents. The birth of Christ transforms history. This Christmas, amid the parties and gift giving, seek and find opportunities to share the life-altering message of Christ.

Remember to pray for our adopted families today and also, that God who created everything is still in control of His creation. Keep praying for each other, caring for each other and take care of your families. John

6. Coming up in January: Our January Bible Study 2011, beginning Sunday, January 9, will be on Women in Leadership: What is leadership supposed to look like within the church? And what place, if any, do women have in leading and serving the community that follows Jesus? This year’s January Bible Study, led by Deron Spoo and Eric Costanzo, will make an honest examination of these questions in light of Scripture, church history, and current needs of the church. Join us on the 9th, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall. The study on the 9th will be followed by an All Church Fellowship. The study will continue on Sunday evenings, January 16, 23 & 30.

7. There is still time for you to help with our December Mission Action Project. You can do just that by bringing all sizes of mittens, gloves, caps, and warm scarves to decorate the Christmas trees (mitten trees). The trees, assembled by our Royal Ambassadors, are outside the Preschool Suite and in the South Education Building Foyer. These items will be delivered to the John 3:16 Mission and to our Caring Center by our Girls in Action during their Christmas vacation. If you have any questions, please call Maribeth Dean at 481-5834.

8. Women’s Ministry. The following four Bible & Book Studies are being offered in January, 2011. The studies vary in price from $9 to $15 and scholarships are available. Please contact the study leaders for further information:
a) Lord Change My Attitude by James MacDonald & Barb Peil, starts Tuesday, January 11, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., for 11 weeks at 71st & 129th East Avenue in Broken Arrow, and is led by Susan Jacobs – jsjacobs53@msn.com. This study reveals that attitudes can affect whether someone stays in the Wilderness or enjoys the blessings of the Promised Land, by changing complaining to thankfulness, coveting to contentment, criticism to love, doubt to faith, and rebellion to submission.
b) Here & Now-There & Then: A Study on Revelation by Beth Moore, starts Wednesday, January 12, 9:30-11:30 a.m., for 11 weeks, and is led by Jill Willey – jilwilley@aol.com. The study presents many points of view on Revelation and allows women to decide for themselves when interpretation varies among scholars. Childcare is available by calling 594-5028.
c) When Life is Hard: Turning Trials to Gold by James MacDonald, starts Wednesday, January 12, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., for 7 weeks, and is led by Pam Rader and Cheryl Baber – pkrader@tulsaconnect.com. This study, based on MacDonald's book, shows how his teachings came out of his own personal struggles during a long season of trials. Childcare is available by calling 594-5028.
d) Faithful, Abundant, True: Three Lives Going Deeper Still by Kay Arthur, Priscilla Shirer & Beth Moore, starts Thursday, January 13, 12:00 Noon, for 7 weeks, in Room 410 North, and is led by Terri Moore - tessamoore27@hotmail.com. This study examines the book of Hebrews, revealing both God's faithfulness and a challenge to be faithful in difficult times; the book of Ephesians, on God's abundance’; and trusting the Holy Spirit to enable us to see what is true and what is false.

DIVINE ACTION
When was the last time you were blessed or lucky enough to have an opportunity to perform an act of kindness or work of beauty? Didn't it feel good.
What does DIVINE ACTION look like in our everyday life?
1. It Begins With Common Answers (Luke 10:25-28)
2. It Moves Beyond a Common Response (Luke 10:29-32)
3. It Embraces Divine Opportunities (Luke 10:33-37)
http://net.bible.org/passage.php?passage=luke 10:25-37#n39
When you read this parable of the Good Samaritan, read it as if it's the first time. Try a different version if it helps you see and hear it fresh.

Helping people is rarely convenient, but it's always Christ-like. Rather than getting caught up in the normal, hyper-speed pace of our day, we should take notice of the people around us and decide that they're important. After Jesus asked the expert in the Law if he understood who the real neighbor was, He gave one final command: "Go and do the same" (v. 37). In the original language of this verse, the verb "do" implies habitual action -- an action that should be common to all of us.
Pray that God will create a divine moment in your life and that you will be ready and willing to serve. Yes, even at this "crazy" time of the year. This Christmas, move beyond the common response.
Remember, God who created everything is still in control of His creation. Keep praying for each other, caring for each other and take care of your families. John
